How To Reduce Burnout When Working in A&EHospital emergency room assignments are usually in high demand but not without reason. The high-stress environments and sometimes-chaotic atmosphere are certainly not for the faint-hearted, or unprepared. Here are six ways to reduce, and even avoid breaking down in these high-stress environments:

Invest in blackout curtains or earplugs for night shifts
If you find it difficult to sleep during the day for your night shift and suffer from sleep deprivation, invest in some home goods that will allow for sufficient rest. Heavy curtains, eyewear, earplugs, and white noise are all low-cost items that will help you get the sleep you need.

Exercise!
Of course it’s on the list. Because it’s true. You need to exercise at least three times a week to increase flexibility, strength and energy. You needn’t be the next marathon runner or body builder but if you dedicate at least 15-30 minutes of exercise in the morning, you’ll begin to feel much better.

Frequently evaluate your work-life balance
Reminding yourself to check in with your work-life balance will prove helpful in catching burnout before it starts. Visualise your work and life responsibilities at opposite ends of a scale. How are you feeling this week? Where are you on this scale? When you notice you’re leaning too much to one side, begin to think of ways you can improve your balance tomorrow. Try again next week, and the week thereafter.

Acknowledge the signs of stress
It is important to recognise the signs of burnout caused by stress. Are you more emotional or moody? Depressed? Feeling sick often? As a medical professional you know the signs, but are you acknowledging the signs? Respect these cues and your health, just as you would for a patient.

Choose the shift that is right for you
If there is a certain shift that interferes with your wellbeing and happiness then it’s not the right shift for you. While, understandably, shifts may have to alternate, you should never feel like your health is deteriorating due to your work schedule. Communicate your needs to your agency to find the schedule that works best for you.

Avoid stress altogether and choose the right environment!
By working with a reputable agency, you will be able to validate locum jobs, save time finding the right one for you, and eliminate miscommunications. When you honestly communicate your needs, your placement will be a better match and you will reduce the chance of burnout.
